You can find ensembles that regularly hold auditions or otherwise invite participation by the community at large. Volunteer chorus formed of interested area singers to perform Handel’s Messiah each December, accompanied by orchestra and featuring professional soloists.
Cary Youth Voices is a non-profit, educational choral program that provides young participants with the skills and experiences for life-long music making. Three choirs are offered: the Prep Choir (Grades 2-3), The Treble Choir (Grades 4-8), and the all-female Concert Choir (Grades 6-12).
Led by Roberta Thomason, this organization strives to be as inclusive as possible, bringing children and families together to learn and experience the joys of music. Ms. Thomason has over 30 years experience as a music educator and choral director, enriching the lives of children at both the elementary and secondary levels.
Cary-Apex Youth Choir is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization dedicated to providing an excellent choral music education to boys and girls in grades 3-8. The choir rehearses weekly on Thursday evenings during the traditional school year and performs at least 1 concert per semester.
The Choir of Saint Michael’s sings a broad range of music from the Renaissance to the finest choral works of modern composers, with a special emphasis on music from the English cathedral tradition. The choir requires singers with excellent music reading skills, and a voice that blends well with others. The choir sings a liturgy each Sunday, as well as Choral Evensong and Sung Compline throughout the season.
Founded in 1949, the Choral Society of Durham regularly performs with professional orchestra and regionally and nationally known soloists. The group also engages in outreach to music students in area public schools. The 30-voice Chamber Choir, often featured in portions of Choral Society concerts, presents its own programs in the community.
Organized in 1983, the Choral Society of Greensboro is open without audition to anyone in the community. Three to four concerts are scheduled during the regular season, along with additional performances at civic gatherings. CSG is sponsored by the Music Center, City Arts of the Greensboro Parks and Recreation Department and is a member of Chorus America.
The Common Woman Chorus' mission is to cultivate connection and change through the healing power of music. Founded in 1983, we are a treble chorus made up of woman-identifying, gender-nonconforming, and transgender individuals. We are an LGBTQ+ centered space and a place for queer joy. We are people always seeking and working toward justice. We believe in the power of our collective voices. The chorus performs two concerts per year and other outreach performances in the community. CWC is a member of Sister Singers Network and GALA Choruses.
Comprised of members with a wide range of ethnic backgrounds, ages and musical experience, Cumberland Oratorio Singers is a community chorus working on and performing great choral works.
Being the resident choir for Sunday morning services at Duke Chapel, the Chapel Choir is the largest and most visible ensemble at the Chapel, singing anthems and leading the congregation in hymns and liturgical music.
In addition to providing weekly sacred choral music, the Choir performs two concerts each year, including their critically acclaimed performances of Handel’s “Messiah” which have been presented annually since 1933. The Chapel Choir has also performed concert tours in China, Poland, the Czech Republic, England and the U.S., performing in such venues as Carnegie Hall, the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, Washington National Cathedral, and St. Martin in the Fields.
The Chapel Choir is open to students, faculty, staff, and community members by audition. Auditions are held at the beginning of the academic year, as well as by appointment.
The Duke Chapel Vespers Ensemble was formed in 1986. The Vespers Ensemble leads evening liturgies throughout the academic year (Advent Lessons & Carols, All Hallows Eve, Michaelmas, Candlemas, Ash Wednesday, etc) and performs concerts at the Chapel, focusing on music of the Renaissance and early Baroque eras. The Vespers Ensemble is directed by Dr. Philip Cave.
