VOICES is pleased to announce their 2017 spring concert—Better is Peace. The concert features Ralph Vaughan Williams’s powerful proclamation of peace Dona Nobis Pacem and Karl Jenkins’ joyous anthem of praise Te Deum. The concert will be held Saturday, May 6, 2017 at 8:00 pm at Memorial Hall, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Dr. Sue T Klausmeyer, VOICES Conductor and Artistic Director, states, “Ralph Vaughan William’s Dona Nobis Pacem which premiered at the Huddersfield Town Hall on October 2, 1936 is a cantata scored for chorus, soprano and baritone solos, and orchestra. The piece skillfully marries texts by Walt Whitman, Statesman John Bright, the Bible, and the Roman Catholic Church liturgy in a cry for peace during the turbulent times prior to World War II.”
Klausmeyer adds, “Te Deum, by Karl Jenkins, was commissioned by the Liverpool Welsh Choral Union to celebrate the city’s European Capital of Culture year in 2008, with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. It is one continuous 15-minute movement and is scored for chorus, two trumpets, timpani, percussion, and string orchestra. The setting is joyous, angular and rhythmically inspired.”
All seating is general admission. Tickets are available directly from VOICES members, online at voiceschapelhill.org, and at the door an hour before the show.
