Registration for the 2017-2018 St. Stephen’s Choir School year is now open. Beginning on September 5, the program takes place on Tuesday afternoons from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and is open to all elementary-aged students (Grades K-5). The Choir School takes place at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, located in the Hope Valley neighborhood in south Durham.

Weekly schedule:

  • 4:30 p.m. – Arrival, snack, recess
  • 5:00 p.m. – Rehearsal and Musicianship
This time will be split up each week between rehearsing music and learning vocal technique, musicianship, music theory, etc.
  • 6:00 p.m. – Dismissal

The Choir School follows the Royal School of Church Music Voice for Life curriculum, which provides a comprehensive, holistic approach to developing musicianship in young singers. Students will be split into two choirs based on grade (K-2 and 3-5), with a teacher for each group. In addition to the regular Tuesday rehearsals, students will sing in three to four Sunday morning services during the year.

There is a one-time registration fee of $25, and tuition is $20/week (paid in monthly installments). The tuition covers all materials for the year, snacks, and a vestment for services. The 2017-2018 program year will run September 5 through December 19, and the spring semester will run January 2 through June 5 (no rehearsal during Durham Public Schools’ Spring Break, the week of April 2). Registration deadline is Friday, August 4.
