Duke Chapel Music hosts four choirs, led by Chapel staff. The Choirs are open to anyone in the Duke and Triangle communities, with an emphasis on Duke students, faculty, and staff. Auditions are held in August.

If you are interested in joining one of the Chapel’s choirs, we would love a chance to hear you sing beforehand. See information on scheduling an audition below:

Chapel Choir
Auditions held August 27- 31, by appointment

Auditions are designed to be simple and informal: we will ask you to sing a short, familiar piece or excerpt, such as My Country ’tis of Thee, Amazing Grace, a Christmas carol, or something else you know. At your audition, you can sing the piece a cappella (unaccompanied) or we can supply a piano accompanist if you need it (just remember to bring an extra copy of the music). We will also listen to how well you sing in tune and gauge how experienced you are with learning new music. It will take about 10 minutes.

Attendance requirements include Wednesday evening rehearsals from 6:00-7:50pm, Sunday morning rehearsals from 9:15-10:30am, and the 11:00am worship service. The Duke Chapel Choir will also give two concerts this academic year: Handel’s Messiah in December (three performances) and Bach’s St. Matthew Passion in March. Additional rehearsals for these and other events will be scheduled in advance.

Duke Evensong Singers
Auditions begin August 8 by appointment

Evensong Singers is a select, auditioned choir that sings weekly at 4pm on Sundays during the academic year in Duke Chapel. The choir is open to all and sings a large and varied repertoire of traditional sacred music from the 16th-21st centuries. Rehearsals are held Monday evenings 8:00-9:30pm.

To schedule an audition please contact erica.y.thomas@duke.edu or 919-684-3898. Auditions will consist of the following:

  1. Sing a brief musical warm up to determine range
  2. Sing a piece of your choosing you feel confident singing (this can be as simple as “Happy Birthday”)
  3. Several sight-reading examples

Duke Vespers Ensemble:
Auditions begin August 1, by appointment

Auditions are now open for the Duke Vespers Ensemble at Duke University Chapel. Singers should have strong sight-reading skills and confident, independent vocal technique. Attendance requirements include weekly rehearsals (Mondays from 6:00-8:00pm), weekly worship services (Thursdays, 5:00pm call for 6:00pm service), and occasional additional services, rehearsals, and concerts. For more information, or to schedule an audition, please contact erica.y.thomas@duke.edu or 919-684-3898.

The Duke Vespers Ensemble is a select chamber ensemble specializing in Early (Renaissance & Baroque) and 20th-century music. The ensemble leads the musical portion of Choral Vespers, a 40-minute candlelight worship service in Duke University Chapel every Thursday at 6:00 pm during the academic year. The ensemble sings at other special services and presents several concerts each year, both at Duke and elsewhere in the Triangle community. Duke Chapel Bach Ensemble Auditions:
Auditions begin August 1, by appointment

Experienced singers are invited to audition for Duke Chapel’s Bach Ensemble conducted by Dr. Philip Cave. The ensemble sings approximately once a month during university term-time, performing music by J.S. Bach and his contemporaries, often accompanied by period instruments. The size and make-up of the ensemble changes to suit the works being performed.

Singers interested in auditioning should have significant experience and solid vocal technique, and be able to sing in a style appropriate to early music. To schedule an audition, please send a resume of choral experience to erica.y.thomas@duke.edu.
