Perhaps no composer has ever written music that more fully expresses the fullness of our human nature than J.S. Bach. And so, the Choral Society takes great pleasure in beginning our 2019-2020 season with a work which virtually explodes with the joy of the Christmas season, his Cantata 63, “Christen, ätzet diesen Tag” (Christians, etch this day in metal and marble!). With the dizzying sound of four trumpets swirling over the joyous sounds below them and the timpani throbbing in support, the choir fairly launches themselves off the floor in exhilarating vocal lines celebrating Christ’s birth. Four soloists reflect on the wondrous knowledge that we have been given much more than we could ever deserve. Continuing the delight of the season with a shift away from the sacred, the concert continues with the buoyant sounds of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite and some of the most meaningful songs from holiday movies, both in well-crafted choral arrangements.
