Choristers & Lay Clerks Auditions (Children/youth grades 3-12)

August 12 – 31 (By Appointment)

Christ Church, Raleigh 120 E Edenton St, Raleigh NC 27601

The Choristers & Lay Clerks of Christ Church Raleigh is an internationally acclaimed accelerated learning program for children and youth from grades 3 – 12. They are a Royal School of Church Music affiliated choir and have toured extensively, having sung a full choral residency at St. Paul’s Cathedral, London, U.K., as well as services at Notre Dame, Paris Fr., Ely Cathedral, U.K., Grace Church Union Square, N.Y.C., St. Paul’s K Street, Washington, D.C., and Bruton Parish, Colonial Williamsburg. The Choristers & Lay Clerks also have recently recorded a commercial album with the award-winning Floating Earth Company at Jesus College in Cambridge, England, which will be released this fall.

The Choristers & Lay Clerks are currently auditioning new choristers. Auditions are very simple and require only an ability to match pitch, repeat clapped rhythms, and sing a piece/song of their choosing (this can be as simple as “happy birthday” or something more complex). This program is for students who wish to make singing classical music their main extracurricular activity and is offered free of charge to those who pass the audition. This group is capped at 25 students. To schedule an audition, or to find out more, contact David Jernigan at djernigan@ccral.org.

You can view a recent video to hear clips from their recent tour to Paris and England

The Training Choir, Grades 3 – 5
The Choristers and Lay Clerks are made of up three primary groups. The Training Choir is the youngest of the three and is comprised of children in grades 3 – 5. Though they only sing with the choir a few times per term, they have two weekly rehearsals which are focused on learning to read and understand written music. Their rehearsals are Tuesdays 6-7:30 (dinner included) and Sundays 1:15 – 2:15.

The Choristers, Grades 6 – 12
The Choristers of Christ Church, Raleigh, have garnered a reputation as being some of the most advanced youth singers in North Carolina. They are comprised of girls and boys (with unchanged, treble voices) who have two weekly rehearsals, Tuesdays 6 – 7:30 (dinner included), and Sundays 1:15 – 3pm, along with weekly private instruction in music theory. Their main responsibility is to sing at Christ Church for morning services, services of Choral Evensong, and various concerts throughout the year. However, they also tour, record, and have regular collaborations with local groups like the Duke Evensong Singers. Their rehearsals are taught by Organist/Choirmaster David Jernigan. The anatomy of this choir is taken from the British Cathedral tradition of the choir of men and boys in which the choristers sing the soprano parts and fully professional adult singers (called Lay Clerks) sing the alto, tenor, and bass parts. Our choir welcomes both boy and girl choristers and offers these youth the opportunity to work with and regularly engage in professional-level music making.

The Lay Clerks, Professional Adult Singers
The Lay Clerks are the professional adult singers of the choir who sing the alto, tenor, and bass parts. They are all degreed in music and have copious experience in choral performance. One of the greatest musical benefits of the youth who sing in this choir is the ability to sing regularly with highly skilled professional musicians.

FREE Half-Day Music Camp and Choral Workshop for Kids @ Binkley Baptist Church
Aug 24 @ 9:00 am – 12:00 pm

We are happy to announce the opening of 2019-2020 choral season with a splash – our free half-day camp and music workshop on Saturday, August 24, 2019.

Our North Carolina Boys Choir and Girls Choir Half-Day Camp and Music Workshop is open to public (all children in our community between 7 and 14 years of age).

When: Saturday, August 24, 2019; 9 AM – 12 PM (Free)
Where: 1712 Willow Dr., Chapel Hill NC 27514. (Corner of 15-501 and Willow Dr.) We rent a spacious and light-filled acoustic space at the Fellowship Hall at Binkley Memorial Baptist Church for the Choirs’ rehearsals and camps.

The camp requirements are simple:
Open to all Triangle area boys and girls (7-14 years old).
No prior singing experience is needed.
Love of singing and a wish to learn classic vocal and performance techniques.
And (importantly!) a desire to have fun with other boys and girls while learning great music!

What:
We have professional vocal training, music theory introduction and lots of fun activities planned for each day.
Day Camp’s Duration is from 9:00 AM until 12:00 PM.
Snacks and Water are provided to all camp participants at no cost.
The added bonus is that participation in one of our day camps supplants/ takes place in lieu of a formal choir audition! We listen to your kids’ voices in a fun, low key camp environment among the group of their peers. Children do not realize that in addition to having a good time at the camp, they are being auditioned too. In our experience, this camp-based “audition replacement” works very well for shy kids.
How:

Please, fill out a short pre-registration form for August 24 music day camp on ncboyschoir.org, so we could make appropriate logistical arrangements for our campers.
A slightly longer registration paperwork will be available at check-in on August 24, and in the email correspondence we will send you shortly before the start of the August 24 camp. We, at the North Carolina Boys Choir and Girls Choir, look forward to seeing you soon!

Registration deadline: September 9

You and your 4th and 5th grade boys are invited to this one of a kind choral festival devoted to providing young singers in the community with the opportunity to participate in a joint singing experience that sparks joy as well as provides a choral resource for music leaders to learn about engaging boys in singing!

This two day choral festival will take place Friday, October 11th  from 5:00pm – 7:30pm and Saturday, October 12th from 9am – 5pm at Price Music Center and Stewart Theatre on the campus of North Carolina State University!

All boys will sing four pieces at our final concert, which will take place on Saturday at 3pm in Stewart Theatre featuring the boys and a special community spotlighted group. Familiarity with the pieces in advance is recommended. Rehearsal tracks will be provided.

The exciting repertoire chosen for the festival is Sikiliza by Sally Albrecht, Music Changes the World by Jim Papoulis, Hey Ba Ba Rebop arranged by Steve Zegree, and …one surprise piece we will learn together at the festival!

This is more than a singing experience! The boys will experience making music with our entire Raleigh Boychoir staff while connecting with each other through games and outdoor activities with some of Raleigh’s best community leaders.

Student registration fee is $30 and includes choral workshops, t-shirt, snack on Friday, and lunch on Saturday.

Teachers and other musical leaders, instructors, and homeschool parents are may bring 6 singers each. Spaces are limited and are first come first serve so register your singers today! To participate, you must register by September 9.
