Opportunities for Singers at Duke Chapel @ Duke Chapel Music Office - 036 Westbrook Building
Aug 15 – Sep 13 all-day

Duke Chapel is home to three choirs led by Chapel Music staff. The choirs are open to anyone in the Duke and Triangle communities; Duke students, faculty, and staff, are particularly encouraged to participate.
Open rehearsals of the Chapel Choir, and auditions for all three choirs, are held at the beginning of the fall semester and throughout the academic year. We make every effort to engage all students and community members who are interested in singing with us. Further information about each choir’s rehearsal schedule and audition process is below.

Chapel Choir
Auditions are designed to be as relaxed and stress-free as possible. You needn’t prepare any repertoire or songs in advance, but you may be asked to sing a simple hymn or song that you know well. The audition will include some simple vocal warm-ups and similar musical activities, and will last for ten to fifteen minutes.
Attendance requirements include Wednesday evening rehearsals from 6:00-7:50pm, Sunday morning rehearsals from 9:15-10:30am, and the 11:00am worship service. The Duke Chapel Choir will also give two concerts this academic year: Handel’s Messiah in December (three performances) and Bach’s St. Matthew Passion in March. Additional rehearsals for these and other events will be scheduled in advance.
To schedule an audition for the Chapel Choir, zebulon.highben@duke.edu or use the online audition scheduling page.

Vespers Ensemble
Auditions by appointment
The Duke Vespers Ensemble is a select chamber ensemble specializing in Early (Renaissance & Baroque) and 20th-century music. The ensemble leads the musical portion of Choral Vespers, a 40-minute candlelight worship service in Duke University Chapel every Thursday at 7:00 pm during the academic year. The ensemble sings at other special services and presents several concerts each year, both at Duke and elsewhere in the Triangle community.

Singers should have strong sight-reading skills and confident, independent vocal technique. Attendance requirements include weekly rehearsals (Mondays from 6:00-8:00pm), weekly worship services (Thursdays, 5:30pm call for 7:00pm service), and occasional additional services, rehearsals, and concerts
To schedule an audition for the Vespers Ensemble, please contact Dr. Philip Cave, philip.cave@duke.edu.

Evensong Singers
Auditions by appointment
Evensong Singers is a select, auditioned choir that sings weekly at 4pm on Sundays during the academic year in Duke Chapel. The choir is open to all and sings a large and varied repertoire of traditional sacred music from the 16th-21st centuries. Rehearsals are held Monday evenings 8:00-9:30pm.
Auditions will consist of the following:
1 Sing a brief musical warm up to determine rang
2 Sing a piece of your choosing you feel confident singing (this can be as simple as “Happy Birthday”)
3 Several sight-reading examples

To schedule an audition for Evensong Singers, please contact Christopher Jacobson, FRCO, christopher.jacobson@duke.edu.

North Carolina Master Chorale Fall Auditions @ First Presbyterian Church
Aug 20 all-day

The Master Chorale will hold fall auditions August 20th, 25th, and 26th, by appointment. You can register for an audition appointment at the NCMC website.

The Symphonic Choir is comprised of approximately 170 volunteer members. This ensemble rehearses Tuesday evenings from 7:30-9:45 PM at First Presbyterian Church in downtown Raleigh. Additional dress/orchestra rehearsals before major concerts are also required. Singers pay dues of $50 per semester and are required to purchase their own music which, as a convenience, will be ordered and sold by NCMC. Singers are also required to purchase their own concert wardrobe (designated black formal attire for women and tuxedos for men). Need-based dues scholarships are available; applications are provided before each semester begins.

The Symphonic Choir’s performance season typically consists of four to six programs including “Resident Chorus” projects with the North Carolina Symphony.

Auditions are 10 minutes long, with the Music Director and the NCMC accompanist. Singers are to bring a prepared classical song or aria that showcases his or her strengths. Singers are asked to sight-sing and vocalize with piano accompaniment. Prior choral music singing experience is required.

In addition to the larger Symphonic Chorus, the Chorale also provides opportunities for qualified singers to participate in smaller, more select, Chamber Choir performances. These projects include a lighter jazz/pop Valentine’s program, Romance in the Air, sung by a 16-voice ensemble; a 40-voice ensemble for our late spring concert; a 60-voice Baroque choir for specialized North Carolina Symphony projects; and other configurations based upon the stylistic demands. These ensembles have a much more limited rehearsal period and include some Monday evening rehearsals. Auditions are very competitive, and singers are expected to have degrees in music and/or extensive experience in choral music. Interested singers should register using the form below and mention their interest in Chamber projects in the Comments section.

For questions, contact Stephen Aber.
